EU labeling rules for wines 2023

On December 6, 2021, the European Union released new rules regarding wine products sold in the EU market. Beginning on December 8, 2023, all wine products will be required to include a compulsory nutrition declaration and a list of ingredients.

Producers can choose to include a nutrition declaration limited to the energy value on the packaging or label, and provide the full nutrition declaration through electronic means such as a QR code. The label must also list substances that may cause allergies or intolerances.

The new regulations do not allow the nutrition declaration to be displayed with marketing or sales information and do not permit user data to be collected or tracked.

It’s important to note that the European Commission is planning to revise labeling rules for all alcoholic beverages, including wines, which will introduce a mandatory list of ingredients and nutrition information. These new regulations for wine products go into effect on December 8, 2023.

The important parts? No marketing or sales information and no user data tracking. This makes it pretty hard to point the QR code to producers website only, those usually are made for marketing and contain tracking. What about different batches and vintages? Each batch has likely slightly different nutritional information, e.g. because of the amount of sugar on the final product.
